How a $37,500 New Orleans Shotgun House Changed One Couple's Life Forever

In 2013, Jessica Rust and her husband bought a classic shotgun house in New Orleans for just $37,500 (around €33,000). The small but charming property has since become the centre of their lives, offering both financial freedom and a unique living space. The Rusts faced an early challenge when purchasing the 527-square-foot (49-square-metre) home. Banks refused to offer a mortgage for properties under $50,000 (€42,500), so they took out a loan instead. Within three months, they had fully repaid it.

The interior is simple yet functional. A single open space houses both the living room and kitchen, with two seating areas in the living section. An archway separates this area from the bedroom, maintaining an airy feel. Most of the furniture and decor came secondhand, sourced with help from family. Outside, the couple transformed the space into a lively hub. Friends and neighbours now gather there regularly, making it the true heart of the home.

The decision to buy a tiny home has reshaped the Rusts’ lives. Without a large mortgage, they gained financial flexibility early on. Their compact but well-designed property continues to serve as both a comfortable home and a social gathering spot.
