Halloween Spending to Reach Record $13.1 Billion in 2022

Halloween spending is set to hit a new high this year, with consumers expected to shell out a record $13.1 billion, marking a significant increase of about 13% compared to last year. Discount stores are the top choice for Halloween items, with 42% of shoppers planning to visit them. Meanwhile, consumers are starting their shopping early, with nearly half (49%) beginning in September or earlier.

Per-person spending is projected to reach $114.45, the highest ever. Consumers are expected to spend close to $4.3 billion on costumes and about $4.2 billion on decorations, with 78% planning to purchase decorations. Candy remains the most popular purchase, with $3.9 billion expected to be spent on treats.

Home improvement stores are getting into the spirit early. Lowe's introduced a collection of inflatable spooky cartoon characters that light up in September, while The Home Depot announced its Halloween collection in late July. Movie Park Germany, however, is preparing for its Halloween Horror Festival, but this runs from late September to early November, not in August.

Halloween greeting cards are also popular, with 38% of consumers planning to buy them, contributing $700 million in spending. Overall, Halloween spending is expected to boost the economy significantly this year.
