Colorado's Breathing, Healing Bus Revives Indigenous Stories of Struggle and Hope
A travelling exhibit called the Breathing, Healing Bus is making its way across Colorado to share the untold history of Indigenous peoples. The project aims to educate residents about the state’s past while offering a message of resilience and hope. Among those leading the effort is Brielle Patillo, a young student from the Northern Arapaho Nation, who wants her community’s voice to be heard. The bus serves as a mobile exhibit, detailing the struggles and strength of Native Americans in Colorado. It covers painful chapters, including the early leaders’ deliberate efforts to remove Indigenous peoples from the state. The Cheyenne and Arapaho nations still live with the trauma of massacres and forced displacement.
Brielle Patillo joined the project to speak out about ongoing issues, such as the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women—a reality her community faces daily. Her inspiration comes from her great-grandmother, who compiled the Arapaho language dictionary, reinforcing her commitment to cultural preservation.
Others involved, like Elizabeth Tafoya, see the bus as proof that Native peoples are not fading away but actively preserving their heritage. December White Plume echoes this sentiment, highlighting how traditions endure despite centuries of oppression.
Beyond history, the exhibit also focuses on healing. Visitors are encouraged to reflect on the past while looking toward a future where Indigenous voices are recognised and respected. The Breathing, Healing Bus brings together education, remembrance, and hope. By sharing these stories, the project challenges misconceptions and honours the resilience of Colorado’s Native communities. The exhibit continues to travel, inviting more people to listen, learn, and engage with this vital history.
