San Diego animal sanctuary shut down after hundreds suffer extreme neglect

A major animal sanctuary in San Diego County has been shut down after authorities discovered extreme neglect among hundreds of animals. Villa Chardonnay Horses With Wings, based in Julian, faced severe financial troubles before rescue groups intervened. The case highlights ongoing concerns about oversight and funding in large-scale animal rescues across Southern California. The sanctuary was seized after investigations revealed shocking conditions. Animals were found suffering from malnutrition, emaciation, untreated wounds, and contagious infections. Dr. Gary Weitzman, head of the San Diego Humane Society, called the situation 'appalling' and a clear case of neglect.

Over 446 cats, 30 dogs, and dozens of other animals were removed from the site. Tragically, four horses, a pony, and a bull had to be euthanised due to their critical condition. One kitten also died while under the care of the Humane Society.

Villa Chardonnay had previously admitted financial struggles in a 2023 video, stating they could no longer adopt out animals because they were overwhelmed by unwanted intakes. The sanctuary later filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2025 after defaulting on a $1.6-million loan.

This case follows similar incidents in the region, including a troubled rescue in Lake Hughes. Both operations appeared to face financial instability, raising broader questions about the sustainability of large-scale animal sanctuaries. The closure of Villa Chardonnay marks one of several high-profile rescues in Southern California this year. Hundreds of animals have been relocated for medical treatment, while the sanctuary’s bankruptcy highlights the financial pressures facing such facilities. Authorities continue to assess how to prevent similar cases in the future.
