Russia Proposes Doubling Childcare Benefits for Working Parents
A new legislative proposal in Russia could significantly increase childcare benefits for working parents. Sergei Mironov, leader of the A Just Russia party, has put forward the draft law, which will be submitted to parliament on Tuesday. Under the current system, parents receive 40% of their average salary while on childcare leave. The proposed changes would raise this to 100% for families with one child. For those with two or more children, payments could reach up to 200% of the parent’s average earnings.
The bill aims to help families cope with lost income when one parent takes time off to care for a child. Mironov’s party argues that the current benefit level is insufficient for many households.
If approved, the new law would provide greater financial support to parents during childcare leave. The proposal now awaits parliamentary review, with discussions expected to begin after its submission on Tuesday.
