India's new defence complex in Shirdi marks a leap toward self-reliance
India has taken a major step towards boosting its defence production with the launch of a new manufacturing complex in Shirdi. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the Nibe Group’s Defence Manufacturing Complex and Artillery Shell Production Project, marking a key moment in the country’s push for self-reliance. The facility, the largest of its kind in the private sector, is set to produce nearly five lakh artillery shells annually. The newly opened complex represents an investment of nearly Rs 5,000 crore. It is expected to create around 4,000 jobs, giving a significant boost to local employment. Singh described the project as a 'golden chapter' in India’s defence manufacturing journey, emphasising the shift from reliance on imports to homegrown production.
At the event, Singh also highlighted the changing nature of warfare. He noted that future conflicts would depend more on technological strength and advanced ammunition than on sheer numbers of soldiers. Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan echoed this view, warning that battlefields would expand beyond physical borders into cyberspace and data ecosystems.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced progress on the state’s defence corridor, now in its final development stages. He pointed to India’s growing expertise in indigenous defence technologies, citing successful operations like Sindoor as proof of their effectiveness. Singh further praised the private sector’s increasing role in strengthening the country’s defence capabilities.
Looking ahead, India has set an ambitious target: to become the world’s largest exporter of defence products within the next 20 to 25 years. The new facility in Shirdi is seen as a crucial step toward achieving this goal. The inauguration of the Nibe Group’s defence complex strengthens India’s position in the global arms market. With a focus on technology and self-reliance, the country aims to reduce imports while expanding its export potential. The project also brings economic benefits, offering thousands of jobs and supporting the growth of Maharashtra’s defence corridor.
