Maharashtra expands cancer care with 27 new treatment centers and mass screenings

The Maharashtra government has rolled out a major expansion of cancer care across the state. With rising cases, authorities are boosting early detection and treatment access through new facilities and screening drives. Over three crore citizens have already undergone cancer screenings as part of the push. The state currently runs nine day-care cancer centres offering chemotherapy and other treatments. Now, 27 more units will open, bringing advanced care closer to patients in their home districts. This expansion follows a steady increase in cancer cases, making wider access to treatment a pressing need.

Screening efforts have intensified, with mobile diagnostic vans reaching communities for early detection. The government has also launched an HPV vaccination drive for girls aged 14 to 15, targeting cervical cancer prevention. Additionally, the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana cancer package will now cover radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and PET scans.

At a recent meeting, experts from a South Korean organisation showcased 'liquid biopsy' technology. This method promises earlier and more accurate cancer detection, further supporting the state’s screening goals. The new day-care units and expanded screening programmes aim to reduce delays in cancer treatment. Patients will now have better access to advanced therapies without travelling long distances. The combined efforts seek to lower cancer rates and improve survival outcomes across Maharashtra.
