Mumbai's New Art and Cultural Centre Sparks Hope and Skepticism
A new Art and Cultural Centre may soon take shape in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. The project, proposed by Anthurium Developers Ltd, will occupy a 3-acre plot along Lal Bahadur Shastri Road in Kanjur West. However, concerns have been raised about whether the city will truly benefit from this open space or if it will remain unused on paper. The plan follows an agreement between Mahindra Lifespaces and GKW Ltd in November 2024. Under this deal, Anthurium Developers—a Mahindra Group entity—received a commencement certificate to develop the land. In exchange, GKW Ltd transferred 5.5 acres of its 37-acre plot in Kanjurmarg, where a large residential project is also underway.
The 5.5-acre parcel includes reservations for a garden, a municipal school, and open amenity spaces. These areas will be developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The remaining 3 acres are earmarked for the Art and Cultural Centre, which will cost an estimated Rs 175 crore. Once completed, it will accommodate over 2,000 people at a time.
A public notice about the proposal was issued in September 2025. The project aligns with the city’s Development Plan, which designates part of the land for a cultural centre or drama theatre. Civic activist Zoru Bhathena, however, has questioned whether Mumbai will actually gain usable open space or if the land will remain undeveloped in practice. The proposed Art and Cultural Centre marks a significant investment in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. If completed, it will add a major public facility to the area. The BMC’s role in developing the remaining open spaces will determine how much of the land benefits residents in reality.
