May holidays expose gender divides in Nizhny Novgorod's leisure choices
The May holidays in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast reveal clear differences in how men and women prefer to spend their time. While many residents choose relaxation over gardening or dacha chores, financial expectations and personal interests shape their plans in distinct ways. Only around 25% of locals are willing to dedicate the long weekend to gardening or dacha tasks. Instead, half of the region’s residents opt to stay at home. Women often prioritise social outings, with shopping and meeting friends ranking high on their lists. Some even wear expensive jewellery—pieces worth up to 100,000 rubles—while working at their dachas.
Men, on the other hand, lean towards barbecues, movie marathons, or gaming sessions. Over half of those in relationships must negotiate their holiday plans with their partners. To secure their preferred activities, men are prepared to spend as much as 25,000 rubles. Meanwhile, many women expect gifts exceeding 50,000 rubles before agreeing to separate holiday arrangements.
The May holidays highlight contrasting priorities between genders in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. With most residents favouring leisure over labour, financial compromises and personal preferences play a key role in shaping how the break unfolds. The trend suggests a broader shift toward relaxation during traditional working holidays.
