Massive Bitcoin Heist unveiled as cybercriminals escape with a staggering $14.5 billion worth of BTC: Gotham City Stories

===================================================================================

The largest known Bitcoin hack in history targeted the Chinese mining pool LuBian, with approximately 127,426 BTC (worth around $3.5 billion at the time) stolen in late 2020. This breach, which went undetected publicly for nearly five years, was revealed in 2025 by blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence.

At the time, LuBian was one of the world's largest mining pools, controlling almost 6% of the Bitcoin network's total hash-rate. The attack is believed to have exploited weak private key generation through a brute-force method, and most of the stolen funds have not been moved since the theft.

This incident surpasses previous large Bitcoin heists such as Mt. Gox and Bitfinex by nominal value at the time of loss. The attack on LuBian is distinctive because it remained undetected publicly for nearly five years.

Other notable large crypto thefts in recent years include the $1.5 billion ByBit hack in 2025, attributed to state-sponsored actors, and a $243 million social engineering attack involving a teenage hacker in 2024. However, these amounts are much smaller than the LuBian hack in Bitcoin terms.

In the aftermath, Arkham found on-chain messages between LuBian and the hackers' wallet addresses offering a reward to act as whitehats and return the stolen funds. As of now, the hacker has not returned the coins, last moving them in July of 2024.
