Hyundai and Tata Motors Overtake Mahindra in SUV Sales in India
Mahindra dominates wholesale sales, Hyundai outperforms in retail, Tata sets new electric vehicle record in the July competition
The Indian SUV market has seen a shift in the rankings as Hyundai and Tata Motors surpass Mahindra in vehicle registrations, according to the latest data from Vahan.
Sales Figures
Hyundai's wholesale passenger vehicle sales in July were 43,973 units, with SUVs making up 71.8% of its domestic sales, the highest SUV share Hyundai has ever achieved in India. This was driven by the consistent demand for its SUV range, particularly the Hyundai Creta, which sold 16,898 units in July.
Tata Motors' retail registrations in July were 39,795 units, with a notable 7,124 units of EV sales. The company is pushing forward in EV leadership, setting a record with this significant EV sales figure.
Mahindra, on the other hand, reported wholesale passenger vehicle sales of 49,871 units in July, with the Mahindra Scorpio and Scorpio-N together selling 12,340 units, indicating sustained interest in rugged SUVs. However, Mahindra's retail registrations were 41,476 units, according to Vahan data.
Market Position
Despite the overtake, Mahindra remains a strong player in the SUV segment, with the Scorpio models contributing significantly to its sales. Hyundai continues to be a major player in the mid-size SUV segment, with the Creta's strong sales attributed to its wide range of variants and premium features. Tata Motors remains competitive in the SUV market, with the Nexon benefiting from its safety features and electric options.
Wholesale vs. Retail Volumes
While there has been a decline in wholesale SUV sales from January to June, at the retail level, SUVs continue to dominate, with models like the Creta and Nexon maintaining strong consumer demand.
Market Challenges and Opportunities
The SUV market in India faces challenges such as economic uncertainty, rising fuel costs, and changing buyer sentiment. However, the SUV wave in India shows no signs of slowing down, with evolving consumer preferences favoring SUVs over other segments.
