Having achieved a decade of success, MVG decides to shutter its well-liked service based in Munich.
Munich's MVG bike-sharing service, introduced in 2015, will come to an end on September 30, 2025. The city's mobility department is currently developing a new bike-sharing system to replace the existing one.
In the meantime, MVG advises users to check their remaining free minutes via the MVGO app. The dismantling of MVG bike stations' modules will begin in the coming weeks, but the stations will remain open until the end of September. Users will be informed about the change via a letter from MVG.
The new bike-sharing system, expected to launch around 2026, will feature advanced electric bikes with innovative technologies, such as wireless charging systems like those developed by TILER for e-bikes. The aim is to provide greater efficiency, less maintenance, and better usability for shared electric bikes in Munich.
Though specific brand or service names directly replacing MVG bike-sharing have not been disclosed yet, there are references to upcoming e-bike systems and mobility hubs planned in 2026 that could represent the new bike-sharing infrastructure in the region.
The delay in implementing the new system is due to a review procedure and a complaint at the Bavarian Higher Regional Court. However, Munich remains committed to maintaining a strong bike-friendly culture and infrastructure, with over 1,200 km of bike paths and a positive biking mindset.
The city is also showcasing integrated mobility solutions, including bike-sharing, at events like IAA Mobility in 2025, hinting at evolving and modernized bike-sharing options becoming prominent soon. The Mobility Hubs in Bavaria, including those with electric bike rentals near Munich, are further indicators of this transition to new e-bike systems.
For now, users can continue to rent bicycles using an MVG bike account and travel around Munich by bicycle as usual. The new system aims to connect Munich and the region more effectively, enhancing the city's mobility options for its residents and visitors.
