XRP Ledger's Bold Upgrades Unlock Lending and Smart Escrows for Faster DeFi
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is preparing for major upgrades to expand its financial capabilities. These changes aim to introduce smart contract-like features while keeping the network fast and efficient. The foundation behind the project has also restructured to focus more on decentralisation and open-source growth. The first upgrade centres on a native lending protocol. This system will allow liquidity pools and fixed-term crypto loans to operate directly on XRPL, cutting out intermediaries. The goal is to turn the network into a decentralised credit hub, with XRP serving as a cross-chain liquidity bridge for both retail and institutional users.
XRPL already has key components in place, including a Multi-Purpose Tokens standard, native automated market maker (AMM) tools, and compliance frameworks linked to Credentials and Permissioned Domains. The foundation confirmed that compliance layers and permissioned tools are already active across the ecosystem’s infrastructure.
The second upgrade, called Advanced Programmability or Smart Escrows, will bring programmable transaction logic to the ledger. Unlike traditional smart contracts, this system will automate conditions for locked funds without slowing down XRPL’s transaction speeds. The design ensures the network remains efficient while adding new functionality.
Alongside these technical changes, the XRPL Foundation has adjusted its organisational structure. The new approach places greater emphasis on independent validators and open-source development within the ecosystem. The upgrades will introduce lending pools, fixed-term loans, and programmable escrows to XRPL. These features are designed to work without sacrificing speed or efficiency. The foundation’s shift toward decentralisation and open-source collaboration will support the network’s long-term growth.
