Uttar Pradesh shifts smart meters to postpaid billing system statewide

The Uttar Pradesh government has switched all smart electricity meters to a postpaid billing system. Consumers will now pay for electricity after using it, replacing the earlier prepaid model. The change applies to all new connections and existing smart meters across the state. The Yogi Adityanath administration issued the order to end the prepaid system. From now on, bills will be generated by the 10th of each month and sent via SMS and WhatsApp. Consumers will have 15 days to pay before receiving a seven-day disconnection notice.

For areas with poor network or communication, manual meter readings will ensure timely billing. The shift means electricity used in May 2026 will be billed in June under the new arrangement. Domestic users with pending bills up to April 30, 2026, can clear them in 10 monthly instalments. The security deposit previously adjusted under prepaid meters will now be added to bills in four equal parts. All major power distribution companies in the state must enforce the new rules.

The postpaid system removes the need for advance payments and introduces a structured billing cycle. Consumers gain more time to settle dues, while manual checks will cover areas with technical limitations. The transition applies to all new connections and existing smart meters statewide.
