Subway Disruption: Suspension of B and C train services at W. 4th Street station, triggered by a local power outage nearby

On Tuesday, July 29, a power outage near the W. 4th Street - Washington Square subway station in Greenwich Village disrupted the B and C train service, causing significant issues during the morning rush hour.

The outage was caused by a loss of power to the subway signaling system, likely triggered by a breaker tripping at a substation serving that station. The exact cause of the power outage is still under investigation, but it may be related to the extreme heat during a heat wave, which can strain the electrical system.

As a result, the signals went to red (stop), preventing trains from proceeding safely. This caused severe disruptions specifically to the B and C lines, which were completely suspended in both directions during the morning rush hour. Other lines such as A, D, E, F, and M were either partially suspended, rerouted, or running with significant delays.

Commuters heading to Manhattan could take the 1 train at Central Park West or the 1, R, or W train for local service on Broadway and 7th Avenue. For nearby Brooklyn service, anyone planning to take the C train could take the A train instead. Bus service was also available in Brooklyn as an alternative. For B train service in Brooklyn, travelers could use the Q train.

By around 2 p.m., B and C train service resumed but still operated with delays. The outage began around 8:30–9:00 a.m. and caused a difficult morning commute especially on the hottest day of the recent heat wave. The MTA recommended using alternative lines such as the 1, J, L, Q, N, or R trains during the outage.

MTA crews worked throughout the day to reset signals and fix the issue, gradually restoring normal operations. NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow stated that service would be restored gradually "within the hour" just before noon on July 29.

This extensive disruption was managed by MTA crews, who worked tirelessly to restore normal operations. More information can be found at mta.info. This is a developing story; check back for updates.
