Saxony-Anhalt Launches 'Emergency Kit' for Domestic Violence Survivors

Around 1,600 people—mostly women—sought help last year from the domestic violence intervention center in southern Saxony-Anhalt. To provide more targeted support for victims in the future, a new prevention initiative has now been launched: the "Emergency Kit."

The project was initiated by WEISSER RING e.V. Saxony-Anhalt, a victims' support organization. The kit is designed primarily for survivors of domestic violence and stalking, offering rapid, unbureaucratic assistance in crisis situations. It contains essential information on support services and emergency hotlines, as well as practical tools for urgent needs.

The initiative was driven in part by Hans-Jürgen Sack, a long-time volunteer with the association. A recipient of the citizen's award "Der Esel, der auf Rosen geht" ("The Donkey Walking on Roses"), Sack donated his entire prize money to fund the Emergency Kit. Additional support comes from Volksbank Halle (Saale) eG, which is providing financial backing as part of a sponsorship agreement.

"This is something truly unique—nothing like it has existed before," says Kerstin Godenrath, state chair of WEISSER RING Saxony-Anhalt. The kit helps victims, even in overwhelming situations, "to keep a clear head and see what support is available." She hopes the project will set a precedent: "Perhaps it will catch on, and other states will follow." Interest is already growing—neighboring Saxony is exploring a similar approach.

At Volksbank Halle, the initiative has also met with strong approval. "It's shocking what still happens in our highly civilized society," says Antje Häge, emphasizing the importance of offering tangible help.

For Sack, the cause is deeply personal. "Prevention is very close to my heart," he stresses. As a former prosecutor, he has witnessed countless severe cases and understands the critical need for swift support.

The Emergency Kit will be distributed through WEISSER RING, the AWO Intervention Center in Halle, and the Halle Women's Shelter, providing immediate aid to those in acute crisis.

The intervention center's helpline can be reached at 0345 68 67 907.
