Philippines and Japan forge stronger agricultural ties to boost exports
The Philippines is deepening its agricultural ties with Japan to boost exports and improve food security. A recent delegation visited Japan to explore advanced farming technologies and discuss trade opportunities. The partnership aims to modernise Philippine agriculture while expanding market access for local produce. During the visit, Philippine officials inspected Japan’s post-harvest systems, including automated drying and dehusking equipment. They also examined grain storage methods, noting that Japan can preserve rice for up to five years—far longer than the Philippines’ current 30-day buffer stock capacity.
Discussions with Japanese officials covered ways to enhance market access for Philippine farm and fisheries products. Topics included lowering tariffs, improving logistics, and adopting agricultural innovations. The Philippines is particularly keen to protect and grow its banana exports to Japan, especially if it joins the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
Field trials in the Davao region have already shown positive results from Japanese agricultural technologies. Plans are now underway to expand these methods to other major crops nationwide. Another key development is the expected entry of Philippine pomelo into the Japanese market before the end of 2026.
To further strengthen trade, the Philippines will take part in a horticulture-focused expo in Japan in 2027. The event will showcase locally grown fruits, flowers, and ornamental plants, highlighting the country’s potential in high-value agricultural exports. The partnership between the two nations focuses on innovation, investment, and better food systems. Improved storage, technology adoption, and trade agreements could transform Philippine agriculture. These efforts aim to secure long-term benefits for farmers and exporters alike.
