Mumbai's suburban train crew gets upgraded rest and mental health support

Western Railway has introduced new welfare measures for its suburban train crew in Mumbai. The initiatives focus on comfort, safety, and mental well-being, with upgraded facilities and regular support programmes. Crew members now benefit from improved rest areas, stress management sessions, and family engagement activities.

The railway has set up fully air-conditioned Integrated Crew Lobbies at Churchgate, Borivali, and Virar stations. These spaces include ergonomic seating, purified drinking water, and recreational options like chess and carrom boards. Additionally, 12 air-conditioned running rooms are available across the suburban network for overnight rest.

Monthly safety seminars take place at the Churchgate and Borivali lobbies, covering safe working practices, meditation, and stress relief. Psychiatrists from Jagjivan Ram Hospital also conduct dedicated sessions on managing stress. For relaxation, Yoga Room-cum-Tranquility Rooms have been added at all three lobbies. Family support plays a key role in the programme. Special seminars are held for the relatives of motormen, where medical experts provide training in CPR, first aid, and emergency response. These sessions also raise awareness about general health and well-being. The Mumbai Central Division ensures crew members receive more rest than required. Each month, staff are given 8 to 9 rest periods of 22 hours, exceeding standard guidelines. Western Railway continues to engage directly with employees and their families to address concerns and improve working conditions.

The new measures aim to enhance both the physical and mental health of suburban train crew. With better rest facilities, stress management resources, and family involvement, the railway seeks to create a safer and more supportive working environment. The changes reflect an ongoing commitment to staff welfare across the network.
