Meta lays off Singapore's longest-serving engineer amid AI upskilling push

Gary Tay, a veteran engineer with over 15 years at major tech firms, has been laid off by Meta in Singapore. The move comes despite his long tenure and recent efforts to upskill in artificial intelligence. His departure marks the end of a nearly decade-long stint at the company, where he outlasted almost all his colleagues in the region. Tay joined Meta during its early years as Facebook and worked as an AdTech Business Support Engineer. His time at the company spanned nearly a decade, making him one of its longest-serving employees—longer than 99.5% of current staff worldwide and 99.9% of those in the Asia-Pacific office.

Before Meta, he spent years at Microsoft, building a career across two of the world’s biggest tech firms. Over the past year, Tay focused on retraining in AI. He developed systems that boosted work efficiency by 200-300% while ensuring service standards for key clients remained intact. Originally hired in London, Tay later relocated to Singapore, where he now faces redundancy. With his newborn due in July, he is taking time to reconsider his professional path.

The layoff cuts short Tay’s nearly 10-year run at Meta, where he was among the last remaining from the company’s early days. His work in AI-driven efficiency improvements had set a high bar for performance. For now, he remains focused on family and evaluating his next steps in the tech industry.
