Lower Saxony unveils €170M road and bridge construction push for 2026

Lower Saxony has announced a major road and bridge construction programme for 2026. The plans include new bridges, resurfacing projects, and cycle path upgrades across multiple districts. Funding will come from the federal government's special infrastructure and climate neutrality fund (SVIK), alongside other sources.

The Lower Saxony State Agency for Road Construction and Traffic (NLStBV) has outlined its 2026 schedule for the Wolfenbüttel regional district. Around €170 million will be allocated to state roads, bridges, and cycle paths across the region.

A new cycle path bridge is set for construction near Cremlingen in the Wolfenbüttel district. Meanwhile, resurfacing work will take place at the Adersheim intersection (L 495/K 80/K 90).

In the Gifhorn district, two bridge replacements are planned: one over the Aller flood channel near Müden (L 283) and another over the Oker River near Groß Schwülper (L 321). Resurfacing will also occur on the L 286 near Vorhop and Knesebeck, as well as on the L 414 in Seershausen.

The Helmstedt district will see a new bridge built over the Lapau (L 647). Additional resurfacing projects are scheduled for the L 633 near Rieseberg and the L 644 in Helmstedt.

In the Peine district, roadworks are planned on the L 472 near Broistedt. Cycle path repairs will also take place along the L 411 and L 472.

None of the bridge projects in Gifhorn, Peine, Wolfenbüttel, or Helmstedt will rely solely on SVIK funding. The special fund will instead support parts of the wider programme.

The 2026 construction programme will improve transport links across Lower Saxony. Bridges, roads, and cycle paths in four districts will receive upgrades, with €170 million allocated for the work. The projects aim to enhance infrastructure while balancing funding from multiple sources.
