John Johannsen assumes leadership role at MEW, now in charge of operations

Thomas Johannsen, a 57-year-old Hamburg native with a wealth of experience in the energy and mineral oil industry, has recently assumed the role of CEO at MEW Mittelständische Energiewirtschaft Deutschland.

Before joining MEW, Johannsen served as CEO of FinCo Energie, where he successfully established a wholesale business in Germany. His tenure at FinCo Energie and his involvement in various associations, such as the European Association of Independent Fuel Suppliers (UPEI) and the Allianz für Mobilität und Energie (afm+e), demonstrate his extensive experience in the energy sector.

In his new role, Johannsen will continue to develop the strategic direction of MEW. His focus is on strengthening the position of MEW as a central voice and service provider for the medium-sized energy industry in Germany. He aims to drive digital transformation, enhance sustainable energy solutions, and advocate for regulatory frameworks that support the interests and growth of medium-sized energy companies.

Johannsen's strategic direction revolves around innovation, sustainability, member support, and advocacy in the evolving German energy market. Key achievements under his leadership so far include initiating new member services to improve operational efficiency for medium-sized energy providers, advancing collaboration within the industry to foster innovation, and emphasizing sustainability and energy transition as core priorities for MEW’s future strategy.

Johannsen's role as President of UPEI suggests a strong focus on independent fuel suppliers and a potential interest in promoting their interests. His long-standing board membership at afm+e indicates a commitment to the mobility and energy sector. His experience in senior positions at Mabanaft Deutschland and Marquard & Bahls further underscores his expertise in the energy and mineral oil industry.

In his previous role as President of the European Association of Independent Fuel Suppliers (UPEI), Johannsen demonstrated a keen understanding of the needs and challenges faced by independent fuel suppliers. His experience at FinCo Energie, where he established a successful wholesale business, may indicate his strategic acumen and ability to drive growth.

Johannsen's commitment to sustainability and energy transition is evident in his efforts to advance sustainable energy solutions at MEW. He aims to increase the organization’s influence in policy discussions to better represent the needs of the German energy Mittelstand (SMEs).

As Johannsen's tenure at MEW is relatively recent, ongoing developments are expected. However, his strategic emphasis on innovation, sustainability, member support, and advocacy bodes well for the future of the organization and the German energy sector.

  1. Thomas Johannsen's extensive experience in the energy sector, as demonstrated by his roles in FinCo Energie, UPEI, and afm+e, along with his background in the industry, positions him well to address public affairs in finance, particularly in the energy sector.
  2. In his new role as CEO at MEW, Johannsen aims to enhance sustainable energy solutions, drive digital transformation, and advocate for regulatory frameworks that support the interests of the medium-sized energy industry, engaging in public affairs related to industry, finance, and energy.
