Green Party targets wealth inequality and far-right alliances at Graz congress
The Green Party kicked off its federal congress in Graz on Saturday. Co-leader Leonore Gewessler took the stage to criticise both the far-right FPÖ and the governing Social Democrats (SPÖ). Her speech focused on wealth inequality, political alliances, and the party’s push for fairer taxes.
The event also set its sights on the upcoming Graz municipal election, where the Greens hope to secure second place on June 28.
Gewessler opened with sharp words for the SPÖ, accusing them of failing to deliver on promised wealth and inheritance taxes. She argued that 'billionaire heirs and private-jet elites'—those living off interest—should pay their fair share. Addressing the delegates, she urged them to 'run every day to win hearts for the green cause' by prioritising policies that ease financial burdens for ordinary people.
Her criticism extended to the far-right FPÖ, warning that the Social Democrats might form coalitions with them after the next state elections. She cited international examples, like the UK, where Greens are actively resisting right-wing policies. Earlier, Judith Schwentner, Green Deputy Mayor of Graz, welcomed attendees by showcasing the city’s progress under Green leadership. She highlighted its growing greenery and vibrancy as proof of the party’s impact. The congress also turned attention to the June 28 municipal vote, where the Greens aim to overtake rivals and claim second place in the city’s political landscape.
The congress reinforced the Greens’ focus on tax reform and opposition to far-right alliances. Gewessler’s speech set a combative tone, targeting both wealth inequality and political rivals. With the Graz election looming, the party now pushes to turn its federal momentum into local gains.
