DHL Express debuts AI image recognition for seamless global shipping
DHL Express has launched an AI-powered image recognition tool for international shipments. The new feature lets customers photograph their items to generate automatic, customs-compliant descriptions. It marks the first large-scale use of such technology in global express shipping.
The system works by analysing photos of shipment contents through computer vision. It then creates structured descriptions that meet international customs rules. Customers only need a smartphone or camera-equipped device, with no registration required.
The tool aims to simplify the traditionally manual process of declaring package contents. Enna Zarate, Senior Vice President of Digital Customer Solutions at DHL Express, called accurate descriptions a key part of the customer experience. Dirk Olufs, Global Chief Information Officer, added that precise data capture improves every stage of shipping. The feature is now live in eight markets. A phased global rollout is planned throughout 2026.
The AI-powered solution removes the need for manual content declarations. It speeds up customs processing and reduces errors in shipment documentation. DHL Express expects the technology to enhance efficiency across its international network.
