Coinbase Lists ResearchCoin: A New Ethereum-Based Token for Scientific Research

In a significant move, Coinbase has added support for ResearchCoin (RSC), an Ethereum-based token designed to incentivize participation in scientific research via the ResearchHub platform.

The listing, which began on or after July 31, 2025, is contingent on sufficient liquidity conditions. Once sufficient supply of ResearchCoin is established, trading on Coinbase's RSC-USD trading pair will launch in phases.

ResearchCoin aims to foster collaboration and open-access communication in academic research, reducing silos and accelerating the pace of scientific discoveries through its blockchain-based rewards mechanism. The listing announcement sparked a significant market response, with RSC’s price surging about 70% around the listing date and daily trading volumes hitting over $1.2 million shortly after the announcement. At the time of reporting, RSC was trading around $0.74 with a market capitalization near $86.77 million.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong co-founded ResearchHub, leading to some governance scrutiny. However, Coinbase emphasized that the listing process was reviewed by its Digital Asset Support Group (DASG) to avoid conflicts of interest, and Armstrong disclosed his non-involvement in voting on the listing decision.

This move reflects Coinbase’s broader strategic emphasis on supporting utility-driven cryptocurrencies and emerging blockchain initiatives, leveraging Base’s scalability and low fees to cater to efficient and practical crypto applications.
