Chinese Zoo Turns Wishing Pool Coins Into Lifeline for Leukaemia Patient
A zoo in eastern China has stepped in to support a woman battling leukaemia after she requested a refund for her annual membership. The donation, totalling 14,361 yuan ($2,100), came from both the zoo’s funds and coins collected from a wishing pool. The gesture has drawn widespread praise online for its compassion. Liu, a resident of Nantong, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) on May 7. Her condition worsened rapidly, leading to a severe lung infection and repeated bleeding. With medical bills surpassing 100,000 yuan ($14,700), she was admitted to the ICU before being transferred to a hospital in Suzhou for emergency care.
Facing mounting costs, Liu contacted Nantong Forest Safari Park to cancel her annual membership and request a refund. Instead of simply processing the refund, the zoo decided to go further. Staff gathered all the coins from the park’s wishing pool, amounting to 4,361 yuan. The zoo then added 10,000 yuan ($1,470) from its own funds, bringing the total donation to 14,361 yuan.
The full sum was transferred directly to Liu’s bank account. In response, she expressed deep gratitude, noting that she had only expected a refund but received far more support than anticipated. The zoo’s actions have resonated widely, with many online commending the decision to repurpose the wishing pool coins for direct aid. Liu’s medical expenses remain high, but the donation provides immediate financial relief. The case highlights how small collective contributions can make a tangible difference in times of crisis.
