Bacolod cracks down on fuel pump calibration amid rising prices
Bacolod City Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr. has called for stricter enforcement of an existing ordinance on fuel pump calibration. The push comes as rising fuel prices and Middle East tensions raise concerns over fair measurements for consumers. Gamboa, who chairs the committee on human rights, authored a resolution to tighten compliance with the 2012 regulations. City Ordinance 601, passed in 2012, sets rules for the calibration and sealing of fuel dispensing pumps. It applies to all businesses selling liquid petroleum products in Bacolod, whether already operating or planning to open. The law requires regular inspections and spot checks to ensure pumps dispense the correct amount of fuel.
The ordinance also outlines fees for registering and sealing pumps, along with penalties for violations. Proper sealing and calibration prevent overcharging and shortchanging customers at the pump. Gamboa stressed that accurate measurements are especially important now, with fuel prices climbing and global tensions affecting supply. Under the existing law, all fuel dispensers must undergo routine examinations. The city aims to protect consumers from financial losses caused by incorrect fuel measurements.
The resolution reinforces the need for consistent monitoring of fuel pumps across Bacolod. Businesses found violating the calibration and sealing rules will face penalties as outlined in the ordinance. The move seeks to maintain transparency and fairness in fuel transactions during a period of economic uncertainty.
