Yakutia's mining giants invest billions to transform remote communities
Major resource companies in Yakutia have pledged billions of rubles to fund infrastructure and social projects across the region. Over the past five years, nearly 27 billion rubles have been directed toward schools, roads, housing, and community facilities. The investments come as mining and oil and gas firms, which account for 60% of Yakutia's economy, expand their support for remote districts.
ALROSA, the region's largest diamond producer, contributed the largest share—over 17.6 billion rubles—toward local development. Four other companies—Surgutneftegas, Polyus, Yakutugol, and Diamet—have also reported regularly on their projects since 2021. Their efforts have led to tangible improvements in areas like Aldan, Tomponsky, and Neryungri.
In Aldan, Surgutneftegas built 15 new schools and kindergartens. Polyus focused on the Tomponsky District, reconstructing roads and upgrading medical centres. Yakutugol launched a housing programme in Neryungri, providing homes for 500 families. Meanwhile, Polus Aldan JSC is expanding housing in the Aldan District, completing two apartment blocks and constructing three more with 750 units. New agreements have also been signed for upcoming projects. Prognoz-Serebro LLC will build a bridge over the Tompo River in the Tomponsky District. YVGK JSC and Polymetal JSC will maintain a 577-kilometre stretch of the Kolyma–Nedzhadinskoye road. YATEK PJSC plans a multifunctional centre, a recreational alley, and a skate park in Kysyl-Syr, Vilyuysky District. TYUNGD JSC will construct an educational building for the Little Academy of Sciences in Chapaevo. Nordgold Management LLC secured funding for a new school, kindergarten, and shooting range in Tyanya. Sakhaneftegaz LLC is financing a fibre-optic communication line between Lensk and Olekminsk.
The combined investments reflect a long-term commitment by resource firms to improve living conditions in Yakutia's remote areas. With projects ranging from education and healthcare to transport and housing, the funding aims to strengthen local infrastructure and services. Most initiatives are already underway or nearing completion.
