Women in Tech Face Significant Challenges, Survey Finds
A recent survey by Acronis, the Women in Tech Report, sheds light on the challenges faced by women in the tech industry. It highlights a significant gender gap in perceptions of fairness, opportunities, and work-life balance. The report reveals that 63% of women find balancing work and private life a considerable challenge, compared to 49% of men. Women also face a double burden: expectations of longer hours and higher performance, and career setbacks due to family obligations. Only 60% of women view the tech industry as fair, compared to 75% of men. Stereotypes pose a significant obstacle for 41% of women in technical professions and leadership development, compared to 33-36% of men. Additionally, 52% of women fear that family responsibilities will limit their career opportunities, with 63% believing they must work harder for the same recognition as men. Companies are urged to address these structural barriers and biases. Industry leaders like Alona Geckler from Acronis and Melyssa Banda from Seagate Technology emphasize the need for concrete measures. These include establishing leadership development programs tailored to women and openly addressing biases. Yet, the report does not specify exact companies committed to these initiatives. The Women in Tech Report underscores the urgent need for companies to identify and address structural barriers and biases in the tech industry. By promoting work-life balance, establishing targeted leadership programs, and openly addressing biases, tech companies can foster a more inclusive and equal environment for women.
