Vienna's Sunken City Rises as Pier 22 Transforms the Danube's Shoreline
Vienna's Danube Island is getting a major upgrade with Pier 22, a former industrial site once nicknamed the Sunken City. The area is now being transformed into a modern recreational hub, drawing thousands of visitors each summer. Since its partial opening in 2022, the revamped space has seen a sharp rise in popularity.
The project has already introduced new fitness zones, sunbathing areas, and 8,000 square meters of freely accessible swimming spots. Barrier-free platforms, showers, and a covered sports court have also been added. Visitors can now enjoy open water access points, suspended lounging nets, shaded areas, and a shallow swimming zone for children.
Since 2022, visitor numbers at Pier 22 have surged by up to 50% annually compared to 2021, according to city data. Meanwhile, other nearby recreational areas like Lobau and Donauinsel have seen stable or slightly declining figures due to weather conditions and lingering effects of the pandemic. A café and a seasonal outdoor bar are already operating on-site, with an Italian restaurant planned for summer 2025. The city aims to provide as many free amenities as possible, ensuring the space remains accessible to all. Construction is not yet complete. The final phase is scheduled for spring 2026, expanding the area to roughly 13,000 square meters along a 400-meter stretch of the Danube.
Once fully finished, Pier 22 will offer a wide range of leisure activities at no cost to visitors. The completed site will stretch along the Danube, providing a modern, inclusive space for relaxation and recreation. The city expects the final touches to be ready by spring 2026.
