Vienna's Hietzing Hospital to Shut Maternity Ward by 2027 Amid Declining Births
Hietzing Hospital in Vienna will close its obstetrics unit by 2027, shifting its focus to breast health, oncological conditions, and hormonal disorders. The decision follows declining birth rates across Austria, prompting officials to adjust hospital services. The Vienna Hospital Association has announced the move to better match hospital capacity with current demand, redirecting all births from Hietzing to five other Vienna hospitals: Ottakring, Landstraße, Favoriten, Donaustadt, and Floridsdorf. Newborns needing specialized medical attention are already being transferred to these facilities. The restructuring aims to centralize obstetrics and neonatology under one roof, improving care coordination for mothers and babies. Once the maternity ward closes, Hietzing's gynecology department will specialize in breast health, cancer, and hormonal disorders. The consolidation of maternity services is expected to enhance medical quality by streamlining care for newborns and families, with Hietzing's transition expanding its role in treating breast health, cancer, and hormonal disorders. The changes will take full effect when the obstetrics unit officially closes in 2027.
