Veracel and TNC Partner to Restore Brazil’s Atlantic Forest Through Sustainable Eucalyptus Plantations

Veracel Celulose and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) have joined forces to explore the potential of eucalyptus mosaic plantations in promoting measurable Nature Positive outcomes in Brazil's Atlantic Forest. The two-year collaboration, led by Martin Sneary of TNC, aims to develop a Nature Roadmap that aligns with Brazil's National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Veracel, a Brazilian company established in 1991 and focused on sustainable eucalyptus-based pulp production, is leading this initiative. Gabriel Quijandría, Regional Director of IUCN South America, praised Veracel's commitment, highlighting the UN's recognition of the Atlantic Forest's restoration as a global model of promise. The company's Director of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs, Luis Henrique Tapia, emphasized the importance of the collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

IUCN, through its Business and Nature Unit led by Martin Sneary, will provide Veracel with tools and methodologies, including the IUCN RHINO approach and the STAR metric, to enhance sustainable business practices and decision-making. The collaboration will share knowledge and insights to develop a roadmap that strengthens Veracel's nature strategy and provides scientific evidence of a net positive impact on biodiversity.

The Nature Roadmap will examine how well-managed eucalyptus plantations can contribute to Brazil's biodiversity goals. By working together, Veracel, TNC, and IUCN aim to demonstrate that sustainable forestry practices can have a positive impact on the environment, setting a global example for other industries to follow.
