US launches Project Genesis as Alphabet and Nvidia lead the AI arms race

The race for dominance in artificial intelligence is heating up. Alphabet’s recent stock surge follows the launch of its advanced AI model, Gemini 3, while the US government pushes forward with a major new AI initiative.

President Donald Trump has now signed an executive order to launch Project Genesis, a sweeping plan to develop a national AI platform using supercomputers and federal data. The move comes as tech giants like Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon strengthen their positions in the fast-growing AI market.

Alphabet’s shares have climbed sharply in recent weeks. The company’s latest AI model, Gemini 3, was trained entirely on its own Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) chips. Investors see Alphabet as uniquely positioned, owning every part of the AI supply chain—from data centres and cloud services to vast user data for training models.

Meanwhile, Nvidia remains the clear leader in AI chip technology. The company controls an estimated 92% of the data centre chip market, making it a key player in the sector. Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) also plays a crucial role, manufacturing around 71% of the world’s AI chips as the top foundry.

In cloud computing, Microsoft’s Azure holds the second-largest market share, while Amazon Web Services (AWS) remains the largest. Microsoft’s close partnership with OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, further strengthens its influence. Amazon’s AWS platform also stands to gain as AI adoption grows.

The US government is now stepping in with Project Genesis. The initiative will use supercomputers and data from federal agencies to speed up research in advanced manufacturing, national security, and other critical fields. Companies like Nvidia, Oracle, Dell, AMD, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise are expected to collaborate on the project, bringing together private expertise and public resources.

Project Genesis marks a major push by the US to stay ahead in AI development. Tech firms like Alphabet, Nvidia, and Microsoft continue to expand their capabilities, while government-backed initiatives aim to accelerate progress. The combined efforts of private industry and federal investment are set to shape the future of AI in key sectors.
