Unusual Art Installation in Atlanta Aims to Save Lives Through Colon Cancer Awareness
Atlanta and beyond are set to host an unusual public art installation from September to November. The Georgia Center for Oncology Research and Education (Georgia CORE) has launched the 'Weird Looking Stools' campaign, featuring 30 artist-designed bar stools, each representing a real symptom of colon cancer. The stools are paired with QR codes linking to screening resources, turning everyday spaces into life-saving public health reminders.
The campaign aims to make colon cancer awareness impossible to ignore and to save lives through earlier detection. Each stool serves as a reminder of symptoms such as stomach pain, diarrhea, fatigue, anemia, or unusual stool appearance. Georgia CORE hopes to encourage more people to get screened, as cases of colon cancer among people under 50 are rising fast and it's projected to become the leading cause of cancer deaths for that age group by 2030. Colon cancer is the only preventable cancer, and screenings are covered by insurance for adults ages 45 to 75. However, many people delay or avoid screenings due to stigma or embarrassment, which is especially dangerous as cases rise in younger adults. In Georgia, colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death, with rates higher than the national average. African Americans face higher incidence and mortality rates of colon cancer due to barriers in access, screening rates, and socioeconomic factors.
The 'Weird Looking Stools' campaign is a creative approach to raise awareness about colon cancer and its symptoms. By placing these unique stools in public spaces, Georgia CORE hopes to encourage more people to get screened and ultimately save lives. The campaign serves as a reminder that colon cancer is a serious and preventable disease that affects people of all ages and backgrounds.
