A standard SmartCan kit, complete with cables and adaptors housed within a single carry case, can replace the flightline test capabilities of over a dozen test sets across USAF fighters and UASs. Its versatility allows for broader implementation to include bombers and surface-to-air defensive systems as needed. See Table 1 for more details.
The traditional model of deploying multiple aircraft-specific armament test sets on the flightline is now a thing of the past. With the SmartCan, all aircraft—manned or unmanned, rotary or fixed-wing—can be loaded onto a single unit. Real-time results and measurement variances for each weapon are displayed for quick review, analysis, and problem isolation. Moreover, test log files can be easily moved, copied, or printed for further analysis, supporting emerging predictive maintenance initiatives.
Unlike traditional stationary or handheld test sets, the SmartCan performs functional/active MIL-STD-1760 testing to guarantee armament systems are prepped to support Smart weapons, in essence preventing potential issues before loading. Furthermore, it supports all existing weapons protocols, enabling a full system test for all legacy and Smart weapons. The SmartCan performs both pre-load and functional checkouts, tests multiple squib signals, and conducts a cross-fire test process that surpasses all other O-Level armament test sets in service today. Additionally, the SmartCan's 4-year calibration cycle drastically reduces sustainment burdens, ensuring continued relevance for future-generation platforms and munitions.
The SmartCan's rugged design, practical layout, and compact size make it suitable for field operations anywhere in the world, making it the ultimate tool for flightline armament testing. It is designed and qualified to withstand extreme environmental conditions, meeting MIL-PRF-28800F Class 1, MIL-STD-810C and MIL-STD-461F requirements. Its battery operation further improves field usability; any AA batteries and an innovative power management system allow for up to 40 hours of test time without replacing the batteries. The setup and execution times are also significantly improved, resulting in striking decreases in setup times across platforms such as the F-16 by 91%, and substantial reductions in test execution times for specific test configurations (see Table 2 for more details).
Security concerns are addressed with advanced cybersecurity features and protections, making the SmartCan the most secure O-Level armament test set. Data encryption, a custom operating system, NIST Certified software for Test Program Set (TPS) development, and a removable secure data (SD) card contribute to enhanced cybersecurity.
