Unions demand sweeping reforms to pensions and social security policies

Trade unions and professional associations have joined forces to push for major changes in tax and social security policies. In a detailed petition to the government, they called for higher pensions, tax relief for workers, and better job security across sectors. The demands also include sweeping reforms to existing pension schemes and employment laws.

The groups urged the government to remove the current cap on gratuity payments and exempt pensions from taxation. They also proposed raising the monthly pension for EPFO pensioners to 9,000 rupees, a significant increase from the existing amount. Additionally, they demanded the reinstatement of the old pension insurance system, arguing that the New Pension Scheme should be abolished entirely.

The demands put forward by the unions and professional bodies cover a wide range of economic and labour policies. If implemented, these changes would alter tax structures, boost pension benefits, and improve job security for millions. The government has yet to respond to the petition.
