Xiaomi SU7 Electric Sedan Faces Strong Demand and Delivery Challenges
The Xiaomi SU7, the Chinese tech giant's foray into the automotive industry, has been met with significant demand since its launch in April 2025. The SU7, built on the Modena platform, offers a range of 700-830 km, depending on the battery option.
Lei Jun, Xiaomi's founder and CEO, handed the first cars to ten selected owners during the delivery ceremony, marking the official start of Xiaomi's journey as a car manufacturer. The first batch of the SU7, known as the SU7 Founders Edition, is limited to 5,000 units.
By the end of 2024, Xiaomi had accumulated over 248,000 confirmed pre-orders for the SU7. By March 18, 2025, just 348 days after the launch, the company delivered its 200,000th SU7 unit, surpassing 180,000 total deliveries by February 2025. This impressive delivery rate included over 20,000 units per month.
In July 2025 alone, Xiaomi delivered 24,410 SU7 units, contributing to a total combined delivery of over 30,000 electric vehicles in that month. Despite the introduction of the YU7 SUV, only about 10% of SU7 pre-order customers switched to the YU7, meaning delivery pressure remains high on the SU7.
Xiaomi faces a significant backlog of orders for both the SU7 and YU7 models. The company is targeting to deliver 350,000 vehicles in total for 2025, having delivered 150,000 in the first half of the year. To manage demand and prioritize serious buyers, Xiaomi has started asking some customers to pay the full amount upfront.
The SU7 Ultra variant, which launched after the standard SU7, received 3,680 refundable pre-orders within 10 minutes of announcement and over 23,000 firm pre-orders by late May 2025. These pre-orders required either a 20,000 yuan refundable deposit or a 40,000 yuan non-refundable deposit to prioritize delivery.
Delivery timelines are stretched across Xiaomi's models. The newer YU7 SUV has delivery waits exceeding 10 months, reflecting production bottlenecks that likely also affect SU7 supply. Although exact wait times for standard SU7 variants are not specified, the backlog and production constraints suggest similarly long waits.
The Xiaomi SU7 deliveries took place at Xiaomi's plant in Beijing, owned by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. (BAIC). The price range of the Xiaomi SU7 is 215,900 - 299,900 yuan (29,900 - 41,500 USD). The deliveries started on April 3, with Lei Jun personally delivering the first cars to their owners. Xiaomi stores in 28 cities across China also started the delivery process of the Xiaomi SU7.
The SU7 Founders Edition includes cost-free upgrades like Nappa leather, 25 speakers, and a car fridge. The standard variants of the Xiaomi SU7 will start deliveries in late April-May. The top-trim SU7 features 4WD and a 101 kWh ternary NMC battery.
Great Wall Motor's R&D team has been acquainted with the Xiaomi SU7. The SU7 is taller and longer than the Porsche Tycan, offering a spacious interior for passengers. With its strong demand and robust production, the Xiaomi SU7 is likely to lead to a new phase of the price war in the Chinese car market.
The Xiaomi SU7's success in the automotive industry has sparked interest from other sectors, with tech companies possibly eyeing an opportunity to venture into the transportation field, aligning with the growing trend of electric vehicles. Given the financing requirements for scaling up manufacturing capacity to satisfy demand, partnerships between Xiaomi and finance institutions could be instrumental in addressing the delivery challenges.
