London: Tighter Control of Entry Permit - UK tightens Electronic Travel Authorisation rules from February 2026

The UK government is stepping up enforcement of its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. From February 25, 2026, stricter checks will apply to all eligible visitors. The move follows a transitional phase designed to help travellers adjust to the new rules.

The ETA scheme has been mandatory for German visitors without a visa since April 2026. Each application costs €18 and is processed through an official app or government portal. The UK Home Office oversees the system, ensuring all digital submissions are linked to the traveller’s passport.

Before departure, airlines and transport operators will now confirm that passengers hold a valid ETA. This replaces the earlier lenient approach, which allowed time for travellers to familiarise themselves with the requirements.

The tighter enforcement begins on February 25, 2026. All non-visa travellers must secure an ETA before boarding. Carriers will refuse entry to those without the correct authorisation.
