UK Parents: Get Up to £2,000/Child/Year for Childcare
Parents in the UK can now receive up to £2,000 per child per year from the government to help with childcare costs. HMRC has reminded parents not to miss out on this tax-free support.
The scheme, known as tax-free childcare, is open to parents who are in the UK, at least 16 years old, in qualifying paid work, and have an income of less than £100,000 a year. The child must be under the age of 12, or 17 if disabled, and the money must be used to pay for childcare.
Parents can access the scheme by applying at www.gov.uk/apply-for-tax-free-childcare. For every £8 they pay towards childcare, the government adds a £2 top-up. This means parents can receive a maximum of £2,000 per child per year. Those already in receipt of Universal Credit or childcare vouchers cannot apply for the scheme.
In addition to tax-free childcare, parents can also benefit from other support measures. These include early help programs with family midwives, family accompaniment by professionals, parent training, family groups, family and citizen centers, family education facilities, parenting assistance for disabled parents, crisis counseling, and free confidential advisory services offered by organizations like Pro Familia, Caritas, and youth welfare offices.
Child benefit is also available to help with childcare costs, with rates of £26.05 per week for the eldest or only child and £17.25 for additional children. Furthermore, working families can access 30 hours of free childcare per week during term time for children aged nine months to four years old, provided the childcare provider is signed up to the scheme. Parents are encouraged to explore these options to make the most of the available support for childcare.
