UK Government Funds 11 Homes for Ukrainian and Afghan Refugees in North Norfolk

The UK government has allocated £1.2m to North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) for refugee homes for sale. This funding covers 40% of a scheme to purchase 11 affordable homes, with 10 earmarked for Ukrainian refugees and 1 for Afghan refugees.

The total estimated cost for the 11 homes is £2.1m, with the government grant of £840,000 matched by £1.26m from the council. This initiative comes amidst the Prime Minister's efforts to address illegal immigration, following the Illegal Migration Bill's introduction to prevent asylum claims from those entering via small boats.

Initially, the homes will serve as temporary accommodation for refugees. Later, they will become part of the council's affordable housing stock. The government's funding is drawn from the £500m Local Authority Housing Fund. As of February 2021, there were 161,400 Ukrainian refugees in the UK.

The government's £1.2m funding will help NNDC provide vital accommodation for refugees, with a significant portion dedicated to Ukrainian refugees. This support comes as the government works to outline plans to stop illegal immigration into the UK.
