UK games industry pushes for tax credit to fuel record growth
A new survey has explored how a tax credit could benefit the UK's video games industry. Time to Play, a campaign group, asked 30 leading developers, publishers and funders for their views. The goal was to gather solid evidence for potential government support.
The study focused on a proposed tax credit for culturally British games. This idea follows similar schemes already in place for UK films and French video games. Researchers wanted to understand how such a measure might boost the sector.
The UK games industry has expanded rapidly since a 2009 study. By 2021, its market value reached £7.16 billion. A year later, it became Europe's largest by sales. However, no specific tax incentive for culturally British games has yet been introduced.
Games Investor Consulting carried out the survey on behalf of Time to Play. The findings aim to shape future government policies for the industry.
The survey results could influence decisions on financial support for UK game developers. If introduced, the tax credit may help sustain growth in a sector now worth billions. The government will review the evidence before considering next steps.
