U.S. Sets Record LNG Exports in September 2024, Led by Louisiana
A record 81 LNG tankers departed Louisiana export terminals between September 3 and October 1, 2024, accounting for 67% of total U.S. shipments during this period. This surge in exports was driven by strong demand from Europe and Asia, with key destinations including Mexico, South Korea, China, and Japan.
Louisiana, the leading U.S. state for LNG exports, accounted for 61% of these shipments. The state's Cameron Parish, home to several major LNG facilities, saw significant activity. Cheniere Energy's Sabine Pass facility alone shipped 32 cargoes in September 2024.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) authorized several projects during this period. Commonwealth's LNG facility in Cameron Parish received approval to export up to 1.21 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day to non-FTA countries. Similarly, Sempra Energy's Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project was given the green light for exports to non-FTA countries. Venture Global's Calcasieu Pass LNG project also saw an increase in liquefaction capacity, from 12.0 to 12.4 million tons per year.
Texas, the source of about 31% of U.S. LNG shipped overseas in 2024, also contributed significantly to these exports.
These record exports, totaling 9.4 million metric tons in September 2024, reflect the U.S.'s growing role as a global energy supplier. President Donald Trump's policies, aimed at advancing 'energy dominance', have facilitated this growth in LNG exports.
