U.S. Stocks Hold Steady Amidst Ongoing Trade Talks

U.S.-China trade discussions persist in London, boosting Dow Jones equity index by 105 points.

The stock market maintained its footing on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 inching up, while the Nasdaq outshone them all.

The Dow Jones gained 0.25%, equivalent to 105.11 points, and the S&P 500 rose by 0.55%. The Nasdaq, on the other hand, posted a more impressive gain of 0.63%, moving it just 285 points shy of returning to the 20,000 mark.

Trade talks between the U.S. and China took center stage once again, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick praising the negotiations as going "really, really well." Although export controls are at the heart of the discussions, the path to resolution appears to be emerging, as the U.S. aims to secure the release of rare earth materials from China, while China pushes for more accessible American semiconductors.

Wall Street investors remain cautious, keeping a close eye on developments for any signs of a breakthrough. Meanwhile, China's markets demonstrated renewed volatility, with a sudden dip in equities on Tuesday reflecting the nerves of investors.

Despite the optimistic tone from officials, President Trump's warning that "China's not easy" kept investor expectations in check.

U.S. Small-business Sentiment Shows Modest Recovery

A survey by the National Federation of Independent Business showed a slight uptick in U.S. small-business sentiment in May, marking the first improvement since September. The boost in sentiment was linked to easing tariff concerns and optimism surrounding the president's tax-and-spending bill. However, some companies remained cautious about the broader economic outlook.

The World Bank, on the other hand, revised its U.S. growth forecast downwards to 1.4% for 2025, citing ongoing trade uncertainty.

Elsewhere, investment firm Blackstone announced plans to pour up to $500 billion into Europe over the next decade, citing expectations of accelerated growth in the region.

Investors also watched Wednesday's release of the May Consumer Price Index report closely, as it holds the potential to reshape expectations for inflation and future Federal Reserve policy. Analysts forecast an increase in price pressures.
