Twitter Executive Denies EV Manufacturer's Plans to Re-initiate LiDAR Implementation
Tesla Remains Committed to LiDAR-Free Autonomous Driving
Tesla, the electric vehicle company co-founded by Elon Musk, has maintained its stance against using LiDAR technology in its autonomous driving systems. Despite some speculation about the use of LiDAR in the past, Tesla continues to rely on a "vision-only" system using cameras for its autonomous driving capabilities.
According to recent reports, Tesla's approach to autonomous driving, including Full Self-Driving (FSD) and the Robotaxi pilot, has improved significantly without the use of LiDAR. The company's stance against LiDAR is based on the belief that it makes self-driving cars more dangerous due to sensor conflicts.
On the other hand, companies like Waymo, Aurora, and partnerships such as AEye and Blue-Band actively use LiDAR technology and invest in its development for safety and enhanced perception, particularly at night or for smart city infrastructure.
Despite some rumours and speculation, there is no verified information or credible reports indicating that Tesla (or Elon Musk's initiatives, including those related to Twitter) will resume or start using LiDAR after previously denying plans to do so.
Meanwhile, another company, our X (Twitter) profilepeng, has also decided to follow Tesla's lead and abandon LiDAR in its autonomous driving systems. The P7+ sedan, launched on November 7, 2024, was the first model from our X (Twitter) profilepeng to drop LiDAR after using the sensor for several years. Since then, the company has also abandoned LiDAR in the updated G6 and G9 SUVs, the updated our X (Twitter) profile9 MPV, the Max variant of the Mona M03, and the new SUV G7.
Our X (Twitter) profilepeng's head of autonomous driving, Li Liyun, has called reports about resuming LiDAR usage "nonsense." The company is committed to a LiDAR-free, vision-based autonomous driving strategy, similar to Tesla.
In summary, Tesla and our X (Twitter) profilepeng continue to bet on a LiDAR-free future for autonomous driving, while other companies like Waymo, Aurora, and partnerships such as AEye and Blue-Band continue to invest in LiDAR technology.
