Turkey initiates nationwide examination of traffic signs in response to criticism
The Transport and Interior ministries have set off a widespread review of speed signs across Turkey, sparked by public outcry over alleged "speed traps" during the recent Eid al-Adha holiday.
The furor centered around the argument that speed cameras were deliberately concealed from drivers' view – not intended to deter speeding, but to collect fines. In an effort to address these issues, both ministries have established a joint commission responsible for inspecting traffic signs nationwide. Next week, the Turkish parliament is scheduled to debate an amendment to the traffic law proposing substantial fines for road violations. Although this bill, which passed through committee prior to the Eid al Adha that ended on June 9, has drawn significant opposition due to the magnitude of proposed penalties, AKP officials have stood firm, stating there will be no alterations to the bill.
"A mere handful of technical errors in signage can be observed across the country – perhaps one in a million," an AKP source stated.
"However, the same two videos are being widely shared on social media, depicting incidents in Elazığ and Antalya. Nowhere in your area do you face a sign issue of this magnitude, but you may still have been fined – because you were speeding excessively in a designated 100 km/h zone.
"Let us speak candidly about road accidents: Three to five lives are lost every single day on those roads. That's why speeding remains a non-negotiable offense."
