In the bustling city of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, a series of truck checks were conducted by the NRW police last Friday, aiming to enhance road safety and prevent accidents. These checks were part of a broader enforcement effort across the region.

The checks, which took place at control points including Grevenbroich, Neuss, Rheurdt, Duisburg, Nettetal, Hünxe, Mülheim, Wuppertal, and Essen, revealed that four trucks were denied further travel due to various issues. These issues ranged from insecure cargo and overloading to technical defects.

The primary focus of these checks was to ensure "Fewer accidents involving trucks means more safety for all road users." To this end, particular attention was given to adherence to driving and rest times, as well as proper cargo securing.

Unfortunately, the checks also uncovered instances of drivers being under the influence of intoxicants. Three driver's licenses were seized as a result, with two of these incidents occurring in Essen. In total, seven drivers were found to be under the influence, underscoring the importance of these checks.

A total of 591 trucks were inspected nationwide, with Essen accounting for 60 trucks at the control point on Sulterkamp. Of these, 23 trucks were found to have violations. Furthermore, a total of 125 speeding violations were recorded during the checks in Essen.

These findings highlight the common violations found during increased truck checks in Essen, Germany. These typically include issues related to road safety, vehicle conditions, and regulatory compliance such as driver working hours and cargo security. Critical safety defects (e.g., brake failures), overloading, improper cargo securing, exceeding legally allowed driving times, missing or invalid licensing, permits, or vehicle documentation, and non-compliance with emissions or transport regulations are among the common reasons for denying further travel.

The intensified checks aim not only to deter irregular migration and criminal activity but also to ensure transport safety compliance at key checkpoints like Essen. Trucks found with violations jeopardizing safety or legal standards can be stopped and denied onward travel until issues are resolved.
