Toulon & Lyon Airports Set New Net Zero Emission Standards
Toulon Airport has achieved a significant milestone, becoming net zero in emissions as of 2023. Meanwhile, Lyon Airport, managed by VINCI Airports since 2016, has made remarkable strides in its environmental efforts, reducing direct CO2 emissions by 94% between 2013 and 2024, and becoming the first airport in France with over ten million passengers to reach net zero emissions as of May 2025.
Lyon Airport's transformation began with a switch to 100% biogas for heating, certified with guarantees of origin. The airport now also generates solar power for its own use. The vehicle fleet has been optimized and partly electrified, contributing to the reduction in emissions. All electricity consumed at the airport is now green, with guarantees of origin. Residual emissions are offset through local reforestation projects in the northern Beaujolais region, involving regional environmental organizations, local municipalities, and community forestry groups. VINCI Airports has pledged to keep emissions below 500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year at Lyon Airport.
Toulon Airport's achievement is a testament to the commitment of airports to sustainability. Lyon Airport's journey, under VINCI Airports' management, demonstrates the significant impact of strategic environmental action plans.
Both Toulon and Lyon Airports have set impressive benchmarks in sustainable aviation. Lyon Airport's net zero emissions status, along with its commitment to keeping emissions below 500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year, shows that airports can significantly reduce their environmental impact. Local reforestation projects play a crucial role in offsetting residual emissions, further enhancing the sustainability efforts.
