Tough market conditions prove no obstacle for Koehler Group, with record-breaking revenue figures reported in 2023.
Koehler Group Advances Sustainability Efforts and Achieves Strong Sales Volume
In a significant stride towards its sustainability goals, the Koehler Group, a leading player in the German paper industry, has announced its progress in the 2023 fiscal year. Despite adverse international conditions, the company managed to maintain a commendable sales volume of 480,651 metric tons of paper.
The majority of the investments made by Koehler were directed towards the new Willstätt site, the Wetzlar wind farm, construction work related to the decarbonization of the Oberkirch power plant, and improvements in the paper segment's energy efficiency. These investments have moved the Koehler Group significantly closer to its 2030 Promise in the energy segment. In fact, the company was able to cover around 70% of the net electric power and 60% of the net heating needed for its paper production with renewable energy in the 2023 fiscal year.
Koehler's CEO, Kai Furler, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating that the sales volume was a commendable result considering the challenging global conditions. Furler also expressed confidence that the Koehler Group will likely achieve its 2030 Promise.
Koehler's sustainability strategy is structured around six key areas of action, which integrate ecological, social, and economic objectives. The group aims to generate more energy from renewable sources than is required for their paper production operations by 2030. A significant portion of the fibers used are FSC®- or PEFC-certified, ensuring sustainable procurement practices. The group also focuses on developing innovative, environmentally friendly products.
The Koehler Group's commitment to R&D and sustainability is reflected in its revenue from product innovations. The company has already met its target of deriving 15% of its revenue from product innovations. The company maintains a very low complaint rate, underscoring the quality and precision of their manufacturing processes.
The Koehler Group's ambitious sustainability goals position it as a pioneer in the German industry. In fact, renewable energy accounted for more than half of the grid load of generated electricity in Germany for the first time last year. The company's export share stands at 70.2%.
In the 2023 fiscal year, the Koehler Group's Paper and Renewable Energy business areas generated revenue of 1.143 billion euros. The company also disclosed its specific sustainability goals in its third sustainability report, released at the end of August. The report outlines the basic principles of Koehler's Sustainability Strategy, which was first outlined in the second sustainability report.
In the last fiscal year, Koehler invested around 151 million euros, a significant increase from the previous year's 66 million euros. This investment is a testament to the company's commitment to its sustainability goals and its future growth.
However, the German paper industry as a whole experienced a 13.1% drop in sales volume in 2023 compared to the preceding year. Despite this industry-wide challenge, the Koehler Group has demonstrated resilience and a strong commitment to its sustainability goals.
