Tourism in Thuringia: Revenue Exceeds Pre-Corona Levels - Thuringia's Tourism Bounces Back, Generating €4.17 Billion in 2024
Thuringia's tourism industry has rebounded strongly, generating €4.17 billion in gross revenue in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. This significant growth has brought substantial benefits to the local economy and employment. The hospitality sector, which includes travel and wine-related businesses, was the primary beneficiary, earning nearly €1.98 billion (47.6 percent) of the total revenue. This income represents a 10 percent increase compared to 2019. Tourism in Thuringia created jobs, with tourist demand generating income equivalent to roughly 82,500 full-time positions. Visitors contributed to this growth through their spending, making a total of 98.5 million overnight stays last year, with day trippers accounting for nearly half of the sector’s total revenue. Additionally, tourism contributed €390.1 million in VAT and income tax to public coffers in 2024. The strong performance of Thuringia's tourism sector in 2024 has demonstrated its resilience and importance to the local economy. The hospitality industry, including travel and total wine businesses, has benefited significantly, creating jobs and contributing to public finances.
