Only one in three top positions in Thuringia is held by women - Thuringia's leadership gap reveals stark gender disparities by industry
Women in Thuringia held just one in three leadership roles last year, despite making up a significant share of managers in certain sectors. A new report highlights stark differences in gender representation across industries, with some fields offering far better opportunities than others.
Public administration saw the highest proportion of women in charge, with 51 percent of managerial posts filled by female employees. Cities like Erfurt, Gera, Jena, Suhl, and Weimar led the way, where women accounted for 35 to 41 percent of leadership positions—the highest rates in the state.
Education and teaching provided the best career prospects for women, with nearly 67 percent of leadership roles occupied by female professionals. Other service sectors also showed strong representation, as women made up almost 60 percent of executives. Healthcare and social services followed closely, with 58 percent of top positions held by women.
Yet in some areas, opportunities remained limited. The construction industry had the fewest women in leadership, with just 7 percent of roles filled by female managers. The Eichsfeld district and Sonneberg county recorded the lowest overall shares, at only 25 percent each.
Pay gaps persisted as well. Men in managerial roles earned a median gross monthly salary of around €5,300, while women in similar positions received €4,800. Across Thuringia, 13,400 women worked in supervisory or leadership roles, making up 32 percent of all employees in such positions.
The data reveals clear disparities in leadership opportunities and pay between men and women in Thuringia. While some sectors, like education and healthcare, show strong female representation, others, particularly construction, lag far behind. The figures also underscore ongoing wage differences in managerial roles across the state.
