Volunteering: Money for Sports Clubs, DRK and Leisure Activities - Thuringia invests €15 million to boost local volunteering initiatives in 2025
Thuringia has allocated nearly €15 million this year to support local volunteering across the region. The funding covers a wide range of initiatives, from sports clubs to environmental projects. Applications for the next round remain open, with new opportunities set to begin in late 2025.
The state’s local volunteering programme distributes €14.5 million annually to local initiatives. An extra €500,000 goes toward GEMA licensing fees, while the Thuringian Volunteer Foundation receives €3.5 million per year. Legal backing ensures the funding continues long-term.
Recent recipients include the Gera 1902 Gymnastics Club, which secured €25,000. The DRK Gera district branch of the German Red Cross was awarded €50,000. Meanwhile, the Thuringian Badminton Association received €30,000 to support its activities. Smaller grants were also given out. The 'Waldfrieden Outdoor Crew' in Suhl will get around €4,500 for running a holiday camp. The Grundhof Equestrian and Driving Club in Bad Salzungen is set to receive roughly €10,000. The 'Creuzburg Goats' landscape conservation group was granted €5,000. Looking ahead, the next funding round runs until April 2026. New programmes include 'Förderung von ehrenamtlichem Engagement in Thüringen 2026,' starting in December 2025. Museums can apply for half their personnel costs covered for two years, plus training. The 'Aktiv vor Ort' scheme, running until September 2025, offers up to €50,000 per project for local associations.
The funding supports a broad mix of groups, from sports clubs to environmental organisations. With applications still open, more projects could soon benefit from the state’s financial backing. The programme’s structure ensures ongoing support for local volunteering efforts across Thuringia.
